David Ragan (born December 24, 1985 in Unadilla , Georgia ) is an American NASCAR racing driver. He drives the number 38 vehicle for Front Row Motorsports in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport

Ragan drove his first race in the 2004 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series . At the age of 18, he started for Fiddleback Racing at Texas Motor Speedway and turned 20 and contested nine more races that year. In 2004, he drove the Ford 300 for Sadler Bros. Racing in what was then the Busch Series and finished in 31st place. In 2005 Ragan took part in some races of the ARCA Racing Series . His first and only win was at Lanier National Speedway . In the 2006 Busch Series season he drove three races for Day Enterprise Racing .

Craftsman Truck Series

In the Craftsman Truck Series 2006 season , Roush originally intended Mark Martin and Ragan to share the cockpit of the number 6 Ford F-150 . Ragan was supposed to drive the number 50 Ford, while Martin is driving in the number 6. His first top 10 finish was at Texas Motor Speedway , followed by two more. His first pole position was at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis . For a race of the NASCAR Busch Series, he entered the season for the first time on the California Speedway . His debut in the NASCAR Nextel Cup he was on the Dover International Speedway .

Nationwide Series

Ragan has been a regular feature in the NASCAR Nationwide Series since 2004 . He drove as a full-time pilot only in 2007 and 2008 . Ragan was ranked 4th overall in 2008, which should be his best result in the series.

Sprint Cup

Ragan 2007 in the Nextel Cup

On October 11, 2006, Roush Racing announced Ragan as a full-time driver in the 2007 Nextel Cup season . NASCAR veteran Mark Martin previously drove in number 6, sponsored by the AAA . In the remainder of the 2006 season, he could only compete on the Martinsville Speedway , where he did not show a good performance.

His first season as a full-time driver was without any major highlights. He achieved three top 10 finishes. In the rookie classification, Ragan finished second behind Juan Pablo Montoya . He finished the championship in 23rd place. In the 2008 season Ragan showed a significant increase in performance. He narrowly missed the Chase for the Sprint Cup . He drove his best race on the Talladega Superspeedway . He started from position 16 and finished the race in third place. Overall, Ragan came in 14 top 10 positions. In the championship he finished 13th at the end of the season. In the 2009 season he was unable to build on the previous year's performance. Only twice did he finish in the top 10. As 27th overall, he was the weakest driver on his team. After finishing 24th with only 3 top 10 finishes in 2010 , although he did not compete in any Nationwide races that year, he was finally able to show during the 2011 season that there is more to him. He won the Coke Zero 400 on July 2nd, 2011 and thus sat on a rank with "wild card" for the chase, which he could not keep after some bad results. Even after finishing fourth in Richmond - the race just before the decision for the play-offs - Ragan did not get into the chase. At the end of the year, its main sponsor UPS postulated that there would be no further partnership between the number 6 and the logistics company in the 2012 season . For the 2012 season he moved to Front Row Motorsports . He finished the season in 28th place overall. Ragan did not get past 20th place in the first nine races of the 2013 season. At the Aaron's 499 on the Talladega Superspeedway , however, he won the race. It was the team's first victory in the Sprint Cup. In total, he drove into the top 25 16 times and finished the season in 28th place. In 2014 he drove again for the entire season and achieved his first top 10 position in a race at Martinsville Speedway that did not use air restrictors . He finished the season in 32nd place. In 2015 he started for a total of three teams. In addition to a job at the Daytona 500 for Front Row Motorsports, he replaced the injured Kyle Busch at Joe Gibbs Racing . He then drove the number 55 car for Michael Waltrip Racing for the rest of the season . He finished 27th at the end of the season. In 2016 he switched to BK Racing , where he competed for the entire season and finally finished 33rd in the points. For the 2017 season he switched back to Front Row Motorsports to drive the car with the number 38.
