Friedrich I. (bar)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich I († May 18, 978 ) from the Wigeriche family was a son of Count Palatine Wigerich and the Carolingian Kunigunde , a granddaughter of Ludwig the Stammler . He had been Count of Bar since around 955 and Duke of Upper Lorraine since 959 .

First attested in 939, he already held the title of Dux Lotharingiae as early as 942 , although the Lorraine duke title was actually given to his half-brother Otto von Verdun († 944) - both had the same mother.

In an attempt to create his own house power, he exchanged property with the Bishop of Toul , whereby he got the Grafschaft Bar in his hand. He married in 954/955 Beatrix († 23 August after 987), the daughter of Dux Francorum Hugo the Great ( Robertiner ) and Hadwigs , the sister of Hugo Capets ; this marriage brought him the property of the Abbey of Saint-Denis in Lorraine, including the Abbey of Saint-Mihiel , so that Frederick now had a considerable property in Lorraine.

He actually got the duchy of Upper Lorraine in his hands in 959 when he was appointed as his deputy by his uncle by marriage, Liudolfinger Brun , Archbishop of Cologne since 953 and incumbent in Lorraine. Brun's death in 965 did not in fact change anything in Friedrich's deputy position, as Emperor Otto I now retained supremacy over Lorraine in the succession of his brother.
