Hadwig of Saxony

Hadwig von Sachsen, Duchess of Franzien (* between 914 and 920; † 959 ) was a daughter of the East Franconian King Heinrich I and his second wife Mathilde , sister of Emperor Otto I and the mother of Hugo Capet , the founder of the Capetians .

Hadwig was younger than her brother Otto (* 912) and her sister Gerberga , but older than her brother Heinrich (* 921). In 937 or 938 she was married to Hugo the Great , Duke of France . The marriage with Hugo the Great led to the Attigny Alliance. It is unclear from which side the marriage initiative came. However, the marriage was a political means to bind Hugo von Franzien to the East Frankish king. In this way the danger to Lorraine was to be averted. Her son Hugo Capet, who became King of France in 987, was born around 940. Other sons are Odo (from 956 to 965 Duke of Burgundy ) and Odo-Heinrich (from 965 to 1001 Duke of Burgundy). Like her sister, Hadwig mainly represented her son's political interests and not those of her brothers.

When Hugo the Great died in 956, her son Hugo Capet was not yet of legal age, so her brother Brun took over the guardianship. Brun had already taken over the guardianship of his nephew Lothar , the son of his sister Gerberga, in 954 and thus got a very influential position in France.
