Heinrich I (* 919/922 in Nordhausen ; † November 1, 955 in Pöhlde ) from the Liudolfinger family was Duke of Bavaria .

Heinrich was the son of the German King Heinrich I and his wife Mathilde . He had two older brothers, namely Thankmar and the later East Franconian King Otto I.

In 938 Heinrich conspired in league with Eberhard von Franken and Giselbert von Lothringen against his brother Otto, since he had his own claims to the throne. He had previously been captured by Eberhard in the uprising of his half-brother Thankmar. In 939 he was beaten at Birten and forced to leave the empire. He fled to King Ludwig IV in western France , but submitted after he had made peace with Otto.

In 940 Heinrich received the Duchy of Lorraine , but could not maintain his rule and lost it that same year. At Easter 941 he tried to murder Otto in the royal palace in Quedlinburg . The attack was discovered, Heinrich was imprisoned in Ingelheim and pardoned in Frankfurt am Main at Christmas 941 after repentant penance, while many of his followers were punished with death.

Through the mediation of his brother Henry married Judith of Bavaria from the Bavarian Duke dynasty Luitpoldinger and was 948 with the Duchy of Bavaria invested . In Bavaria, his appointment as duke was largely rejected. In the Hungarian wars he was able to prove himself as a successful military leader in 949/50. As his brother's suitor, he escorted Queen Adelheid to Pavia in 951. In 952 he enlarged his duchy to include the marches of Verona and Aquileia . He was able to bloodily suppress an uprising by Liudolf and Konrad of Lorraine . He died of a serious illness on November 1st, 955 in Pöhlde Monastery.

He was buried in the Niedermünster in Regensburg, where his wife Judith is also buried.

The person Heinrich is relatively unknown. Widukind von Corvey paints a picture that is negative from his point of view, but this may have something to do with an aversion to Heinrich.

Heinrich I was married to Judith von Bayern . He had three children with her:
