Rinaldo Bonanno

Rinaldo Bonanno (* 1545 in Raccuja ; † 1600 in Messina ) was an Italian sculptor and architect of the Renaissance in Sicily .

Life

Bonanno was a student of Agnolo and Giovanni Martino da Messina and then from 1559 to 1561 Martino Montanino († 1562), the nephew and successor of Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli (from 1547 in Messina) as master builder of the Messina cathedral. He later joined the workshop of the architect and sculptor Andrea Calamech , whose daughter he married. Through Montanino and Calamech he was taught the style of the Florentine sculpture school , to which he remained loyal throughout his life.

He completed several ornamental fountains in Messina, such as the "Fontana Valverde" in 1563 and the "Fontana Gennaro" in 1590. He worked several times as a restorer and sculptor for the Cathedral of Messina . From 1580 he entered the service of Principe Alberico Cibo in Massa near Carrara.

A little later he worked in the province of Reggio Calabria and finally returned to Messina, where he was mentioned in 1591 as the creator of two triumphal arches to celebrate the discovery of St. Placidus. As an architect, he created the facade of the Chiesa Madre di Superiore in Messina in 1584.

He was one of the most active wood and marble sculptors in Sicily and Calabria in the second half of the 16th century .
