Life

Andrea Calamech was a member of a family of artists from Carrara. He was the son of a not further documented Lazzaro Calamech. Probably trained in Carrara, he became "Capomastro" (foreman) at the Orvieto Cathedral in 1537 .

He then worked for Bartolomeo Ammannati in Florence , where he approached the style of the Florentine sculpture school.

In 1563 he was appointed to Messina as a builder and sculptor for the cathedral, but returned a year later to Florence, where he created the two sculptures "Diligence conquers laziness" for the funeral services for Michelangelo .

In 1565 he was back in Messina, where, in addition to his sculptural work, he made a name for himself as an urban planner and architect. His best known works as an architect are the Palazzo Grano (1563), the Palazzo Reale (1583), the Ospedale Civico and the Palazzo Senatorio in Messina, all of which were destroyed by the great earthquake of 1908 .
