Rogwolod (Old Russian Рогъволодъ, Роговолодъ, English Rogvolod ; † around 978 , Polotsk) was the first known prince of Polotsk . He was killed by Vladimir I , his daughter Rogneda became his wife and mother of Yaroslav the Wise .

Surname

The name Rogwolod was probably the Old Slavonic form of the Scandinavian name Ragnvald .

In Old Slavonic there are the tribes rog and wolost / wladetj = power .

The name Rogneda could come from the Scandinavian Ragnhild .

history

Various Old Russian chronicles reported about Rogwolod . The Nestor Chronicle said that Rogwolod came from "across the sea" and ruled Polotsk . Vladimir asked him for the hand of his daughter Rogneda . However, this refused. Thereupon Vladimir conquered Polotsk , killed Rogwolod and taken Rogneda as his wife.

The Joachim Chronicle gave the reason for the attack on Polotsk that it fought against Novgorod. Vladimir had previously conquered Novgorod from his half-brother Yaropolk , Rogwolod may have been his ally.

The exact dating of the events is unclear. Jakob Tschernorisez mentions June 11th, 978 as the day of Rogwolod's death. The Nestor Chronicle dates the death of the Rogwolod sons to the year 977. Yaroslav the Wise was born around 978.

progeny

  • Isjaslav, son of Rogneda, grandson of Rogwolod, was again Prince of Polotsk.

Its descendants ruled as Rogvoloditschen in Polotsk until the 12th century.

In 1019 Ragnvald Ulfsson , Swedish Jarl from Västergötland fought for Polotsk. It is possible that as a relative of Rogwolod, he was fighting for succession claims.

From around 1120, Rogwolod Vsezlavich and Rogwolod Rogwoloditsch ruled .
