The Eemshaven power plant ( Dutch Eemshavencentrale ) is a coal-fired power plant in the Netherlands . It is one of several large power plants in the Eemshaven energy park in the province of Groningen . The operators are RWE and the RWE subsidiary Essent . The power plant has an installed capacity of 1.6 GW and an overall efficiency of 46 percent. We work with two Benson kettles .
Planning for the power plant began in 2006, construction work in 2009. It received its environmental permit in 2011. In view of the expected nitrogen and mercury emissions, there was fundamental criticism of the construction of such a new coal-fired power plant. In 2014, the environmental requirements were tightened.
The plant went into operation in 2015 and cost around 2.5 billion euros. This is to be shut down again by 2030.
