Eemshaven energy park
The Eemshaven energy park is an industrial area with a cluster of power stations and energy systems in Eemshaven in the Dutch province of Groningen, on the left bank of the Outer ems .
Emergence
The industrial area of Eemshaven was created along with this new port in the 1970s. Right in the initial phase, the Eemscentrale power plant was built there , which is operated with natural gas from the nearby Dutch deposits in the North Sea and is now owned by Electrabel . In addition, the industrial area did not meet with the hoped-for approval as a location for manufacturing plants.
Focus on power generation
In the 1990s, the unused open space of the wind-exposed area began to be used for wind turbines. The first generation of turbines at this Westereems wind farm is now being replaced by more efficient systems. A spatial expansion is also planned.
Since the turn of the millennium, two new large thermal power plants have been built, operated with natural gas or imported hard coal from overseas:
- In 2013, the Magnum combined cycle power plant of the Dutch Vattenfall subsidiary Nuon went into operation. It has innovative storage options and is to be expanded over the next ten years and converted to natural gas.
- The Eemshavencentrale power plant of RWE and its Dutch subsidiary Essent, which was built between Eemscentrale and Magnum, went online in 2015.
future
The Swiss energy company Advanced Power plans to build and operate another combined cycle power plant under the name Eemsmond Energie .
