Thietmar I. (* around 920; † between May 10 and July 14, 978, according to other sources † August 3, after 979) was Count in Schwabengau from 944 , Count in Gau Serimunt from around 970 and Margrave of Meißen and from 976 Merseburg .

Life

Thietmar was the son of Count Christian , brother of Archbishop Gero of Cologne and, through his mother Hidda, nephew of Margrave Gero . After the death of his uncle, Thietmar I gained power and dignity, as he inherited large parts of his marrow , in particular the Hardagau , Swabian and Northern Thuringia and the Hassegau .

He married Suanhilde (* 945/955; † November 26, 1014), a daughter of Hermann Billung from the Billunger family . Margrave Gero II descended from this marriage .

Thietmar was buried in the monastery in Nienburg .

After Thietmar's death, Suanhilde married Ekkehard I of Meißen before 1000 .

  1. A certificate from Emperor Otto II dated July 14, 978 mentions the dead Thietmar, from whose inheritance he is giving away shares. In Merseburg it is only attested in 979; a Meißner document from 979 also mentions a margrave "Diemo" (nick form of Thietmar). The resulting conflict is resolved by bringing the acts of these instruments forward to the year 977. Cf.
