Albert III (Namur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Albert III (* attested from 1035; † June 22, 1102 ) was from 1063/1064 Count of Namur , Vogt of Saint-Aubin , Stablo and Malmedy and was the eldest son of Count Albert II and the Reginlinde of Lorraine.

Albert married Ida of Saxony in 1065/66 († July 31, 1101), daughter of Duke Bernhard II ( Billunger ), widow of Friedrich II. Of Luxembourg († August 28, 1065), 1046 Duke of Lower Lorraine ( Wigeriche ), heiress of La Roche-en-Ardenne .

Albert III von Namur was involved in the succession dispute over the Duchy of Lorraine , which flared up in 1076 after the death of Duke Gottfried the Hunchback . In his will, he had appointed his nephew Gottfried von Bouillon as heir and adopted him for this purpose. The widow of the late Duke, Mathilde von Tuszien , tried to enforce claims in Lorraine and found allies in Bishop Dietrich von Verdun and Albert von Namur, both of whom were interested in the estate of Gottfried the Hunchback.

Dietrich included the Archbishop of Reims , feudal lord for parts of the inheritance, who in turn was Pope Gregory VII , with whom Mathilde was inseparably allied. With the consent of the Pope, the county of Verdun was then transferred to Mathilde, who in turn appointed Albert there as her deputy.

The upcoming negotiations with Gottfried von Bouillon failed, so that King Henry IV intervened and gave the duchy to his own little son Konrad (* 1074; † 1101) - and Albert of Namur with the title vicedux as his regent.

In the following years, Gottfried von Bouillon was able to assert himself against Albert in Lower Lorraine; It was not until 1085 that a controversial settlement came about, which was only agreed years later due to the preparations Gottfried von Bouillons for the First Crusade .

The duke title in Lower Lorraine sank to insignificance by the dispute. Only the introduction of the peace of God improved the situation in the country - a measure in which Albert participated, probably because he himself saw no other way of maintaining peace in the country.
