Frederick II of Luxembourg

Frederick II of Luxembourg (* around 1005; † August 28, 1065 ), from the house of the Wigeriche , was Vogt of Malmedy and Stablo from 1035 and Duke of Lower Lorraine from 1046 to 1065 .

His parents were Friedrich I of Luxemburg and of Moselgau and Irmtrud (or Irmintrud), daughter of Count Heribert von der Wetterau . His grandfather was Siegfried I, Count of Luxembourg , but as the younger son of Friedrich I, he initially had little prospect of an outstanding position in the empire. He and his younger brother Hermann are mentioned as owners and residents of Gleiberg Castle in the 2nd half of the 11th century.

Domination

Little is known about Friedrich in contemporary sources.
Around 1020 he built Limburg Castle on the old royal manor of Baelen , which he inherited from his mother. This was the origin of the city of Limbourg and the county or later Duchy of Limburg .

When Duke Gotzelo I of Upper and Lower Lorraine died in 1044 , Emperor Heinrich III. the Duchy of Lower Lorraine to his younger son Gotzelo II , while Upper Lorraine to the older brother Gottfried III. , "The bearded", left.

After the early death of Gozelos in 1046 Gottfried III. also Lower Lorraine. But Emperor Heinrich lent it to Friedrich, who was a nephew of the Emperor's mother Kunigunde . The associated rights of rule were, however, low.

With the help of the Abbot of Stablo and his brother Adalbero III. of Luxemburg , who became Bishop of Metz in 1047 , Frederick was able to secure the bailiwicks over Stablo and Malmedy as well as the Metz monastery of St. Truiden .

In the meantime Henry IV had become the German king. When Friedrich died in 1065, Gottfried III. "The bearded" the Duchy of Lower Lorraine.

Friedrich was married twice.

  • His first wife was Gerberga († around 1049), a daughter of Count Eustach I of Boulogne ( House of Boulogne ). With her he had a daughter named Judith or Jutta. She was the heiress of Limburg and brought it to her husband, Count Walram-Udo von Limburg, into the marriage.
  • His second wife was Ida († July 31, 1101), a daughter of Duke Bernhard II of Saxony from the Billunger family . No children from this marriage are known.

Friedrich died on August 28, 1065 and was buried in the Stablo Abbey next to his first wife.

After Frederick's death, Ida married Count Albert III. from Namur .
