Boulogne (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Boulogne was the family of the first Earls of Boulogne .

history

It ruled securely from the middle of the 11th century to the middle of the 12th century. The most famous family members are the crusaders Gottfried von Bouillon , Duke of Lower Lorraine , and his brother Baldwin I , King of Jerusalem .

The assured ancestor of the Counts of Boulogne is Eustach I , † probably 1049. His ancestors and, above all, his descent from the House of Flanders via a younger son of Count Baldwin II are speculative and not proven by any documents. It is particularly noticeable that the guiding name Eustach of the House of Boulogne does not appear before Eustach I, the guiding name of Baldwin of the House of Flanders only once.

The family reached its climax with the grandchildren of Eustach I, Gottfried and Balduin. Gottfried inherits the Duchy of Lower Lorraine through his mother and 15 years later becomes the leader of the First Crusade , which for him culminates in the title “advocatus sancti sepulchri” (Vogt of the Holy Sepulcher). Shortly after his death, his brother Baldwin succeeded him and was proclaimed King of Jerusalem. In the absence of male descendants, the family died out in the next generation.
