Judith from Lens

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Judith von Lens (* 1054 in Normandy , † after 1086) was a niece of William the Conqueror . She was the daughter of his sister Adelheid, Countess of Aumale , and of Count Lambert of Lens from the House of Boulogne .

In 1070 Judith married the Earl Waltheof of Huntingdon and Northumbria . In 1075 Waltheof joined the count's revolt against King Wilhelm. After the collapse of the rebellion, he was beheaded in 1076. After her husband's execution, Judith was betrothed to Simon I. de Senlis by her uncle ; Judith refused to marry and fled the country, whereupon Wilhelm confiscated Judith's property, which was mostly in the Midlands and East Anglia , including Earls Barton , Great Doddington , Grendon and Potton .

Judith and Waltheof had three daughters, of whom the eldest, Maud, gave the earldom to their two husbands, Simon de Senlis, who was rejected by Judith, and later David of Scotland , who would later become king of his country.

Remarks

  1. Since Simon is not mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, it is assumed that he came into the country only afterwards, which allows the dating of Judith's escape.
