Hauteville coat of arms

The Hauteville family (Italian: Altavilla ) descends from Tankred von Hauteville , a local nobleman from Hauteville-la-Guichard in Normandy , whose numerous sons took part in the Norman conquest of southern Italy from 1035 onwards . They conquered several smaller lordships and counties, inherited the Duchy of Apulia in 1127 and ruled the Kingdom of Sicily from 1130 to 1194 as the first dynasty .

history

Tankred fathered twelve sons with two wives. Around 1035 he transferred his property to the fourth son Gaufred and instructed the descendants, who had gone empty-handed, to conquer theirs by force or cunning. It so happened that at least eight of Tankred's sons stayed in southern Italy in the 11th century . First the eldest sons Wilhelm and Drogo found themselves there, who worked their way up from simple mercenaries to company commanders and finally to counts (albeit of little importance). Over time, the success of the two other Hautevilles moved to Apulia : Around 1045 Humfred , then the local heir Gaufred and the - later important - first son with Frensendis, Robert Guiskard . It was followed by Malgerius, Wilhelm and finally the youngest son of the Altavillian Tankred, Roger .

Tankred's older sons, especially Robert Guiskard , seized Apulia , and Roger I , the youngest son, was supported in the conquest of Sicily . The descendants of Robert Guiskard received the Principality of Antioch in the First Crusade , the descendants of Rogers became kings of Naples and Sicily . The resulting Norman-Altavillian dynasty ended with Tankred von Lecce and his deposed son Wilhelm III.

Both properties passed to other families through female succession: the Principality of Antioch through Raimund von Poitiers to the family of the Counts of Poitou , the Kingdom of Sicily through Constanze (1154–1198), who in 1186 was Emperor Henry VI. (1165–1197) married to the Staufers , namely to their son Friedrich II and his son Manfred . The Crown of Aragon derived its claims from Manfred's daughter Konstanze , which were enforced through the Sicilian Vespers in 1282, which is why Sicily belonged to the Kingdom of Spain until 1713 .
