Tankred from Hauteville

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tankred von Hauteville was a Norman Valvassor and adventurer. He lives in the 11th century and is the progenitor of the Hauteville dynasty , to which the first kings of Sicily also belonged.

Life

Tankred was a minor nobleman who owned a small estate on the Cotentin Peninsula near Coutances . It is not certain which of the three villages with the name Hauteville it was, but it is believed that it was Hauteville-la-Guichard .

Tankred fathered twelve sons with two wives. Around 1035 he transferred his property to the fourth son Gaufred and instructed the descendants, who had gone empty-handed, to conquer theirs by force or cunning. So it came about that at least eight of Tankred's sons stayed in Lower Italy in the 11th century . First the eldest sons Wilhelm and Drogo found themselves there, who worked their way up from simple mercenaries to company commanders and finally to counts (albeit of little importance). Over time, the success of the two other Hautevilles moved to Apulia : Around 1045 Humfred , then the local heir Gaufred and the - later important - first son with Frensendis, Robert Guiskard . It was followed by Malgerius, Wilhelm and finally the youngest son of the Altavillian Tankred, Roger . The resulting Norman-Altavillian dynasty extended to Frederick II , whose mother Konstanze was a granddaughter of Rogers.
