A cover letter is generally a formal letter to a person or institution .

A cover letter is used specifically when it is part of a number of documents (" attachments "). The cover letter is addressed personally to the recipient and contains a list of the attachments. These are often printed matter or reproductions and do not contain a personal salutation.

A cover letter can also be part of an application for a job. In the cover letter, the applicant introduces himself / herself briefly and explains why he / she would like to be hired and why he / she has applied for the advertised position, citing individual qualifications and skills.
