Sven Giegold (born November 17, 1969 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , Spain ) is a German economist and politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ).

Giegold is a co-founder of Attac Germany and was one of the formative activists both in setting up and in coordinating the network in Europe. From 2001 to 2007, with a short interruption, he was a member of the nationwide ATTAC coordination group, and until 2008 he was also a member of the ATTAC council. He is co-founder of the Tax Justice Network , on whose board he served for several years from 2005.

Giegold has been a member of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen since September 2008. He ran on the European election list in 2009 and has been a member of the European Parliament since June 2009 . In the European elections in 2014 and 2019, he ran for second place and was therefore the top male candidate of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen for the elections.

Life

Sven Giegold grew up with his mother, a photo lab technician, and her partner, a locksmith, in Hanover . There he attended the Herschel School , where he also passed the Abitur. From 1991 to 1996 he studied economics , politics and adult education in Lüneburg , Bremen and Birmingham . In 1996 he graduated with a Masters degree in Economic Development and Policy from Birmingham. This was followed in 1999 by studying at the University of Bremen on aspects of globalization , especially international macroeconomics .

Political development

Beginnings

As a student, Sven Giegold was involved in the ecological movement . He was a member of the state board of BUNDjugend in Lower Saxony and has been active for many years in the youth environment network as well as in the establishment of the Ecological Center Verden and the ecological housing cooperative AllerWohnen eG .

Attac (2000-2008)

When Attac Germany was founded in 2000 , he was one of the approximately 200 founding members. He was a co-founder of Share e. V., the association in Verden / Aller, which was responsible for Attac finances until the Attac sponsoring association was founded at the end of 2004. From 2001 to the end of 2002, he and others were in charge of the volunteer Attac office in Verden. From 2001 to 2004 and after a one-year break from October 2005 to November 2007, Sven Giegold was in the Attac coordination group, initially as one of several representatives of the first Attac office in Verden, and since 2003 as a representative of the BUND member organization. Until October 2008 he continued to represent the BUND in the Attac Council. He was also a member of Attac Germany's working group on financial markets and tax evasion . In 2002 he was co-founder of the European ATTAC coordination of national ATTACs. In particular, he kept in touch with Attac France. Furthermore, he was involved in the initiation and coordination of several large congresses ( McPlanet .com 2002, Controlled Democracy 2004, Solidarity Economy 2006, Capitalism Congress 2009). In 2006 he worked on the “10 principles for a democratic EU treaty”. In 2006 he initiated the European Attac Summer University project , which took place in Saarbrücken in August 2008. He was often invited as a spokesperson for Attac on German television programs.

Giegold until his party membership in September 2008 from September 2002 through the Bewegungsstiftung supported as moving workers. From January 2005 he was on the international board of the Tax Justice Network (TJN), which he co-founded in 2003.

In June 2016, Giegold spoke out in a newspaper article on the occasion of the federal referendum in Switzerland on the basic income initiative against an unconditional basic income .

Sven Giegold has been chairman of the board of the European Christian Convention since 2017 .

Further extra-parliamentary engagement (since 2004)

He has been with Campact's advisory group since 2004 . In 2007 he was also elected to the presidential assembly of the Evangelical Church Congress for six years . There he is involved in the project management for the Ecumenical Church Congress 2010 and initiated the network "Ecumenical Church Congress".

In 2010 Giegold was one of the many founders of the Solidarity Modern Institute (ISM) and in 2011/2012 one of the spokesmen for the board.

On October 11, 2016, Sven Giegold initiated a petition on change.org under the title "EU Parliament: Make lobbying transparent, prevent quick page changes!", Which already had a five-digit number of supporters after a few days.

Alliance 90 / The Greens (since 2008)

In 2008 Giegold was brought up for discussion as a candidate for the European Parliament by Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen NRW . In September Giegold joined the Greens . At the same time he ended his involvement with Attac, "so as not to endanger Attac's party-political neutrality." Within Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen, he worked alongside Claudia Roth as co-chairman of the Democracy Commission and worked a. a. on the subject of “Social and Solidarity Economy”. Since then (as of 2010) Giegold has taken part in all of the party's resolutions and programs on the euro crisis .

In 2008, as an economic expert for the Greens, he was asked by many media about the economic and financial crisis and invited to numerous TV programs. At the federal party congress of the Greens in November 2008, he played a key role in drafting the “ Green New Deal ” proposal on the financial crisis , which was passed at the Green Party congress in January 2009. It consists of three parts: a socio-ecological investment program , a program to regulate the financial markets, and a program to balance poor and rich countries.

At the European Green Party Congress in January 2009 in Dortmund, Giegold was voted fourth on the green European list. In the European elections on June 7th, 2009 the Greens won 14 seats in parliament, so that Giegold moved into parliament. In the European Parliament he joined the group Die Grünen / EFA , for which he was a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Special Committee on the Financial, Economic and Social Crisis in the 7th legislative period (2009-2014) . He was also an alternate member of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee .

At the suggestion of the Greens of North Rhine-Westphalia, Giegold was a member of the 14th Federal Assembly , which elected the Federal President on June 30, 2010. On June 16, 2012, Giegold was elected to the state executive committee of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia.

At the federal delegates' conference in 2014, the party delegates from Alliance 90 / The Greens nominated Sven Giegold to second place on the list behind Rebecca Harms . Giegold ran as the party's top male candidate. In the eighth parliamentary term (2014–2019), Giegold was, as before, a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs for his group. He was also a member of both special committees on tax rulings and other measures of a similar nature or effect (TAXE 1 and TAXE 2), in the "Committee of Inquiry into alleged violations of Union law and abuses in the application of the same in connection with money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion “As well as in the special committee on financial crime, tax evasion and tax avoidance. As a deputy member, Giegold was on the Budget Committee , the Committee on Constitutional Affairs and the Special Committee on Terrorism .

For the 2019 European elections , the party delegates nominated Giegold again in second place after Ska Keller , so that Giegold ran again as the party's top male candidate. Giegold is also a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs in the ninth legislature (2019-2024) . He is also an alternate member of the Committee on Environment, Public Health and Food Safety .

criticism

On November 29, 2019, Giegold was accused of double standards by Twitter users and CDU politician Sven Schulze when he landed at Tegel Airport . He had previously voted in the European Parliament on the same day to declare a climate emergency . Giegold justified the flight with an appointment in the Federal Council.
