Tax Justice Network

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tax Justice Network ( TJN ) is an independent international network that works on issues such as tax avoidance , tax evasion , tax competition , financial transparency and tax havens . The network conducts research, advice and exchange of knowledge with the aim of increasing understanding of the problems and developing and promoting reform proposals. The TJN reports are cited by numerous major media outlets such as the New York Times , The Guardian , Washington Post and FAZ . Experts from the Tax Justice Network also appear at public hearings of the Finance Committee of the German Bundestag and are represented in expert committees of the EU Commission .

organization

Tax Justice Network Limited is a UK registered non-profit limited by guarantee company . John Christensen is the managing director. In Germany, the network is mainly represented by Markus Meinzer, who also represents TJN in the tax justice network . TJN is a member of the Financial Transparency Coalition (FTC). TJN focuses on research and knowledge sharing and does not do political campaigning. However, it works with other non-governmental organizations and supports them in terms of content. These include: Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ), Actionaid , Association for Accountancy and Business Affairs (AABA), Attac , Bretton Woods Project, Christian Aid , Tax Justice Europe, Eurodad , Finance Watch and Oxfam .

Goal setting

The organization wants to draw attention to the fact that large sums of money are being withdrawn from national economies and national budgets by the fact that profits and income are shifted away from the countries in which they are generated into so-called " tax havens ". Both developing countries and rich countries are affected by the resulting loss of revenue, developing countries but more because they have a smaller tax base. In March 2005, TJN estimated the capital of wealthy individuals relocated to such tax havens at $ 11.5 trillion and the tax revenue removed from their countries of origin at $ 255 billion annually. In addition, there are even higher annual loss of income from multinational corporations who use tax havens for bogus booking of profits and for manipulating internal transfer prices.

As an alternative to the current system of national profit determination, TJN proposes the unitary taxation procedure , in which the total profit of an international group is determined first, before it is then divided among the countries and taxed there.

2012 study on tax evasion

In 2012, a study by the Tax Justice Network found that home states lost up to $ 280 billion in income taxes through tax evasion. Financial assets of $ 21 to $ 32 trillion are invested in tax havens .

Shadow financial index

The TJN regularly publishes the shadow financial index , in which the role of the last 82 states and territories as financial centers for tax avoidance and evasion is assessed. The 2015 report names the following 10 most important places for shadow finance in terms of secrecy and global weight : Switzerland , Hong Kong , United States , Singapore , Cayman Islands , Luxembourg , Lebanon , Germany , Bahrain and Dubai .
