Henry III. (Bavaria)
Henry III. von Bayern (* 940 ; † October 5, 989 ) from the Luitpoldinger family was born in 940 and was the son of Duke Berthold of Bavaria. He ruled as Duke of Carinthia and Bavaria.
After the death of his father Berthold in 947, Heinrich was not enfeoffed with the duchy, but rather the brother of King Otto I , Heinrich , who had married Judith , a daughter of Arnulf the Evil , in 937 .
It was not until 976, when Carinthia was separated from Bavaria, that Heinrich received from Emperor Otto II. Carinthia his own duchy and the margraviate Verona , which he lost again in 978: The reasons for this are not sufficiently proven. Perhaps Heinrich joined the rebellion of the Bavarian Duke Heinrich II and therefore had to go into exile. In 983, however, Heinrich was the last Luitpoldinger to be enfeoffed with the Bavarian Duchy, to which the Duchy of Carinthia and the Italian brands were now also attached. After the empresses Theophanu and Adelheid had reconciled with Henry II ( the brawler ) in 985 after the controversy over the successor to Otto II and gave him back his old duchy of Bavaria, Heinrich III kept. only the Duchy of Carinthia with the brands. With his death on October 5, 989, the verifiable male line of the Luitpoldinger ends.
