Duke Wilhelm I of Aquitaine

Duke William I of Aquitaine founded on September 11 , the monastery of Cluny , the starting point and the center of a major reform of the Church is. Duke Wilhelm renounces any power over the monastery and excludes any interference of secular or spiritual power in the internal affairs of the monastery ( exemption and immunity ). In particular, he renounces the economic use of the lands. The monastery itself is placed under the direct protection of the Pope , an innovation for the 10th century. Wilhelm only appoints the first abbot Berno and then allows the convent to freely elect an abbot.
