Berno von Baume
Berno von Baume (* around 850 in Burgundy ; † January 13, 927 in Cluny , France ) was the first abbot of Cluny .
He was a monk in Saint-Martin d'Autun , then in Baume-les-Messieurs . In 890 he founded the Gigny monastery on the property of his family , which he immediately subordinated to the Pope . William I , Duke of Aquitaine , entrusted him with founding a monastery under the same conditions: the Abbey of Cluny ( 910 ).
However, Berno decided not to create a new monastic rule , but instead adopted - as requested in the deed of donation from Wilhelm I - the rule of Benedict of Nursia in the form of Benedict of Aniane . However, he realized a merger of previously independent monasteries (including Déols , Massay and Souvigny ), from which the Cluniac monastery association was developed under his successor Odilo .
In 925 he resigned as Abbot of Cluny.
