Raqqada ( Arabic رقادة) is a place with about 1,000 inhabitants in the Kairouan Governorate in Tunisia . The place was in the years 876 to 910 the residence city of the Aghlabid Empire . There is also a branch of the University of Kairouan here.

location

Raqqada lies in flat terrain at a height of approx. 70 m above sea level. d. M. about 12 km (driving distance) southwest of Kairouan on the RN2.

history

According to tradition, the Emir Abū Ishāq Ibrāhīm II suffered from persistent sleep disorders in the old capital Kairouan and therefore decided shortly after he came to power (875) to move the residence to the countryside. He chose the place Raqqada, only 12 km away, and had it equipped with several palaces, mosques, cisterns etc. within a short time. As early as 909, the palace city was conquered by the Fatimids under Abdallah al-Mahdi and probably also partially destroyed in the process. After Fustat / Cairo was founded in 969, Raqqada was abandoned; some columns etc. were reused in the new buildings.

During the excavation work started in 1960 in the former palace district, numerous pottery and ceramic shards were found, some of which could be put back together again. The Musée national d'art islamique de Raqqâda , opened in 1986, shows numerous exhibits on the history and development of Islamic art in Tunisia and the rest of the Maghreb - including coins and Koran manuscripts .
