Burchard I (Vendôme)

Burchard called the Venerable , also: Bouchard I. le Vénérable , († 1005 or 1007) was Count of Vendôme and from 987 Count of Paris .

family

Burchard came from the French Burchardinger family ; he was the son of Burchard Ratepilate , whom he followed between 956 and 967.

Life

Burchard was able to marry Elisabeth de Melun , the widow of Count Haymon von Corbeil , on the condition that the fortresses of Corbeil and Melun , which belong to Elisabeth, were handed over to a confidante of the king. In return, Burchard made his in-laws vice counts of Vendôme .

Burchard and Elisabeth had two children:

Burchard was one of Hugo Capet's most important advisors . When he was elected King of France in 987 , he made Burchard his successor in the central and important county of Paris .

According to some sources, Burchard died in 1005, according to others, he retired to the Abbey of Saint-Maur , where he died in 1007.
