Leon Phokas ( Middle Greek Λέων ὁ Φωκᾶς ; * before 970, † after March 990) was a Byzantine rebel against Emperor Basil II.

Life

Leon Phokas was the elder son of the opposing emperor Bardas Phokas . He had proclaimed himself a basileus in Charsianon in the late summer of 987 and subsequently conquered almost all of Asia Minor. Leon was installed as governor of Antioch on the Orontes , which he expanded into a fortress after the defeat and death of his father on April 13, 989 with the help of numerous Armenians and Muslims and was able to hold it for another six months. On November 3rd, 989 Leon Phokas was ousted by the Antioches and shortly afterwards captured by Magistros Michael Burtzes . Basil II banished him to Dorylaion . Leon's younger brother Nikephoros , who had supported the usurper Bardas Scleros after the death of his father , was pardoned.
