Raimund Berengar VI. (Provence)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Raimund Berengar VI. (* probably 1281; † 1307 ) was Count of Provence , Prince of Andria and Piedmont .

Life

Raimund Berengar was the fifth son of Charles II , King of Naples , and his wife Maria of Hungary. He was born during a short stay of his parents in Provence , where his father wanted to take command of a fleet. His homeland is reflected in his name and that of his wet nurse , Adelasia von Aix. He was known to be born after Robert of Anjou , and no document mentions him in Naples in the next few years , so it can be assumed that he spent his childhood under the supervision of Guillaume de Manoir in the cities of Aix-en-Provence , Sisteron , Saint -Victor spent at Marseille and Barjols . From Sisteron he and his two brothers Robert and Louis sent the letter on May 2, 1286, in which they asked King Edward I of England to release their father.

By the Treaty of Canfranc of October 29, 1288, he and his two older brothers were held hostage in exchange for their father. Since Raimund Berengar was ill at the time, he was only brought to the Iberian Peninsula on February 23, 1289, where he met his brothers again on March 9 in Moncada . The three were treated according to their princely status and were able to surround themselves with an entourage of around 100 young nobles. Raimund invited the theologian Petrus Johannis Olivi to him, but received only one regretful letter. According to the provisions of the Treaty of Anagni , the three brothers were released on June 7, 1295.

Raimund Berengar traveled to Naples and then followed his brother Louis to Rome. In 1297 he accompanied his brothers Philip I of Taranto and John of Durazzo to Jolanda of Aragón, the daughter of King Peter III. and her brother Robert's bride to escort to Naples.

In December 1300 Raimund received the fiefs of Monte Sant'Angelo , Capaccio , Eboli , Isernia , Atri and Vieste , Altamura , the counties of Gravina and Andria , and the castles of Vairano , Lesina and Terra di Muro . He lost the county of Gravina again in 1302. On December 13, 1304 he was appointed Prince of Piedmont. However, since Piedmont was owned by his brother in 1307, it is possible that this is just a title. A little later he was appointed Vicar General of the Kingdom and in August 1305 he was appointed Grand Seneschal.

Raimund Berengar's share in Neapolitan politics was limited. He fought against Aragón in Sicily in 1301 and gave the Knights Templar land near Gravina. In July 1304 he traveled again to Rome, again to escort a bride for his brother Robert. This time it was Sancha, the daughter of King James II of Mallorca . He himself married a little later Margarete, a daughter of Count Robert von Clermont , but died shortly after the wedding.
