history
Nocera Inferiore is the ancient Nuceria Alfaterna .
In the Middle Ages, his Hohenstaufen castle played an essential role in the Kingdom of Naples :
- Here in March 1267 Helena of Epirus was imprisoned, the former queen as wife (and now widow) of Manfred of Sicily ; she died here in 1271.
- Beatrix of Provence , heiress of Provence and Queen of Sicily, as the wife of King Charles I (Charles of Anjou), died here on September 23, 1267 .
- Pope Urban VI. , who had been captured by the Anjou , was able to escape to the Nocera Castle, where he met the Neapolitan King Charles III on January 15, 1385 . excommunicated . This in turn besieged the Pope in Nocera.
