Helena Dukaina Angelina (* probably 1242 ; † July 1271 in prison in Nocera ) was Queen of Sicily and wife of the Hohenstaufen Manfred .

Life

Helena Dukaina Angelina was a daughter of Michael II Angelus , Archon of Epirus and Aetolia . The marriage between her and Manfred was concluded on June 2, 1259 in Trani . The couple had five children:

  • Beatrice, 12 ?? -1307 attested, ∞ Manfred IV .; † 1340, 1279 Margrave of Saluzzo
  • Friedrich; † after June 2, 1312
  • Heinrich, * probably 1262; † October 31, 1318 in prison
  • Enzio; † before 1301
  • Flordelis; † after February 27, 1297

Manfred fell on February 26, 1266 in the battle of Benevento against Karl von Anjou while trying to maintain the rule of the Hohenstaufen in southern Italy . His widow Helena received news of his death at Lucera Castle , fled in the direction of her homeland, but was imprisoned in Trani with her children by the bailiff there and handed over to Karl von Anjou on March 6, 1266.

Helena was separated from her children, whom she never saw again, brought to Lago Pesole at the beginning of April and brought to Karl. With the help of the Pope, Charles planned to marry Helena to a brother of King Alfonso the Wise of Castile and León, but this connection did not materialize when he joined Konradin from Staufer .

In March 1267, Helena was imprisoned - accompanied by her servants - at Nocera Castle , as a letter from Charles shows. With another letter from 1271, Karl dismisses the servants, which can only mean the previous death of the mistress.
