Castel San Lorenzo is an Italian commune with 2313 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region .

geography

The neighboring communities are Aquara , Felitto and Roccadaspide . Other districts are Madonna della Stella and Ponte Calore. The place borders on the National Park Cilento and Vallo di Diano and is part of the Comunità Montana del Calore Salernitano .

Culinary

The cuisine of Castel San Lorenzo is particularly characterized by its rusticity and the use of regional products. In contrast to the Neapolitan cuisine, it has remained largely free of French influences throughout history and is based on the rather cheap foods of the farmers such as fish, vegetables and wheat. Castel San Lorenzo is best known for its "blue fish", buffalo mozzarella and olive oil. The export of these goods is also an important industry in the region. Typical dishes are the “scialatielli”, a pasta with seafood; “Parmigiana di melanzane”, fried aubergines with tomatoes and mozzarella and the “torta caprese” a cake with almonds and chocolate.

Viticulture

Here are white , rosé and red wines and sparkling wines under the name of Castel San Lorenzo DOC produced since 1991 a "controlled designation of origin " ( Denominazione di Origine Controllata - have, which was last updated on March 7, 2014 DOC). Cultivation and vinification are also permitted for this denomination in the neighboring municipalities of Bellosguardo and Felitto and in parts of the municipalities of Aquara , Castelcivita , Roccadaspide , Magliano Vetere and Ottati (all in the province of Salerno) .

The white wines mainly consist of the Trebbiano Toscano , Malvasia Bianca and Moscato grape varieties . In the red wines, the Barbera and Aglianicone grape varieties are predominant.
