Panorama Laurino

Laurino is a characteristic medieval town of the Cilento , the southern part of the province of Salerno and the southernmost part of the Campania region (Italian Campania ). The place belongs to the Comunità Montana del Calore Salernitano .

history

The first historical mention of the CASTELLUM DE LAURI comes from the year 932. In the 12th century the population was around 3500, spread over the main town and four other suburbs (Le Chiane Soprane (Piaggine), Le Chiane Sottane (Valle dell'Angelo) ), Fogna (Villa Littorio) and Zadalampe). The decline was initiated by the armed conflicts between the Guelphs and Ghibellines , during which Laurino was destroyed by the troops of Frederick II . Due to a strong migration to the north in order to find work, the place has only 1376 inhabitants today (as of December 31, 2019).

The place name Laurino is most likely derived from "Laura", which was created by the settlement of numerous Greek monks by the monastic order of the Basilians, who lived as hermits in the numerous caves in the region.

Geographical location

Laurino is located on a 531  m high mountain. Below the hill is the Calore Lucano river . This rises from a spring on Monte Cervati and flows through the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park .

Numerous buildings, such as the ruins of the ducal palace, the frescoes and carvings of the main church "Santa Maria Maggiore" and the two medieval bridges over the river Calore, are reminiscent of the past.

In earlier times, Laurino was known as the "Pearl of the Calore". Today the place is characterized in particular by the natural and pristine vegetation and diverse initiatives, such as the jazz festival "Jazz in Laurino" that takes place in August.

Districts

Laurino has two districts: Pruno and Villa Littorio.
