Campo di concentramento

After Italy entered the war in June 1940, the fascist regime set up an internment camp ( campo di concentramento ) in Campagna . The internees were housed in two former monasteries, the Convento di San Bartolomeo and the Convento dell'Immacolata Concezione , which provided space for hundreds of internees. The first monastery was in good structural condition, while the second monastery was in danger of collapsing and had so many deficiencies that the internees living there were eventually moved to San Bartolomeo .

In the monastery of San Bartolomeo the conditions were characterized by overcrowding, precarious hygienic and sanitary conditions, lack of water and the lack of any heating option in winter. In August 1940 two internees died of typhus . The first internees were Italian Jews and members of hostile nations. Later, however, more and more Jews came from Germany , Austria , Poland and Fiume , as well as Czechoslovak and Yugoslav Jews. In July 1940 there were 369 internees in Campagna; in April 1942 there were 115, in August 1943 148. With the support of the Jewish welfare organization DELASEM ( Delegazione per l'Assistenta degli Emigranti Ebrei ), cultural activities were stimulated and promoted: a small orchestra and a library were created, and a small one in one room Synagogue built; Football tournaments took place.

The internees were only released in September 1943. After Campagna was liberated on September 19, 1943, a refugee camp was set up in the monastery of San Bartolomeo , which was headed by the Allied Displaced Persons Sub-Committee .
