Roscigno is an Italian commune with 679 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region . The place is located in the National Park Cilento and Vallo di Diano and is part of the Comunità Montana Alburni .

geography

Roscigno covers an area of ​​14 km². The town center is 570 m above sea level. The neighboring communities include: Bellosguardo , Corleto Monforte , Laurino , Sacco and Sant'Angelo a Fasanella .

Roscigno consists of the inhabited Roscigno Nuova and the abandoned village of Roscigno Vecchia. Furthermore, the Monte Pruno, which belongs to the municipality, houses an archaeological excavation site.

history

Roscigno Vecchia

The village was first mentioned in the 11th century. A century later the village already had 110 inhabitants. At the beginning of the 20th century, the village dissolved and re-established itself a little out of the way. The background was the fear that the village could be buried under a landslide. However, this has not happened to this day and the abandoned houses - many of them from the 17th century - are in good condition. UNESCO has declared the "Pompeii of the 19th century" a World Heritage Site and protects the village from decay.

archeology

On the Monte Pruno (879 mslm) a prince's grave from the time of the Lucanians with rich grave goods was discovered during excavations in 1938 , which can be seen today in the Archaeological Museum in Salerno . These include a silver crown, a war chariot, bronze items and much more. There are also other graves there, which probably all belonged to one settlement.
