Olevano sul Tusciano is a municipality with 6,703 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region . The etymology of the place name is unclear: it is suggested that it derives from olibanus (rich in olive trees) or from the personal name Olivius .

geography

The place is north of Battipaglia in the narrow river valley of the Tusciano on the southern foothills of the Monti Picentini . The seat of the municipal administration is Ariano, other districts are Monticelli and Salitto. The municipality is a member of the following associations and organizations: Comunità Montana Monti Picentini ; Regione Agraria n.7 - Medio Sele, Parco dei Monti Picentini , Associazione delle Città della Mela Annurca, Associazione Nazionale Città dell'Olio, Associazione Nazionale delle Città della Nocciola.

history

In Roman times the Via Appia and the Via Popilia passed through Olevano. The castle of Olevano has belonged to the parish of the Archdiocese of Salerno since the Norman period.

Grotta di S. Michele : stalactite cave with a single-nave chapel with three apses, in which wall paintings in the Byzantine-influenced style have been preserved. The frescoes belong to the 10th and 11th centuries.

economy

In agriculture, wine, olives and nuts are produced, poultry breeding also plays a role. The hydropower plant of the Italian energy group Enel , in which Atel Holding holds a 20% stake, offers jobs . Commuters work in the industrial area of Battipaglia.
