geography

The municipality is located at the foot of the Apennines at 30  m slm. The river Sarno rises nearby and later flows into the Mediterranean at Pompeii . Neighboring municipalities are Quindici (AV), Siano and Bracigliano .

history

In the village there is a medieval castle that belonged to Francesco Coppola , who played an important role in a conspiracy of the barons against Ferdinand II of Aragon , who at the beginning of the 16th century brought Sarno under his control along with large parts of southern Italy. Walter III. from Brienne is buried in the church of S. Maria della Foce , which was rebuilt in 1701. The travertine found near the sources of the Sarno was also used to build Pompeii. Before being incorporated into the Kingdom of Naples , Sarno was a county ruled by the Orsini , Coppola , Suttavilla and Colonna families .

On May 5, 1998, landslides destroyed large parts of the municipality and parts of the neighboring towns of Quindici , Siano and Bracigliano . 161 people died.
