Grape of the Trebbiano toscano variety, which is called Cognac Ugni Blanc in the growing area.
Vines in the Italian region of Marche.

Trebbiano or Trebbiano Toscano is a white wine variety . It is one of the oldest and now the most widely grown grape variety in Italy and France and brings large yields.

A smaller berry and more valuable variety of Trebbiano Toscano is the Procanico grape variety grown in Umbria , which is mainly used in the DOC white wine Orvieto . There are numerous other varieties such as Trebbiano di Soave , Trebbiano Romagnolo , Trebbiano Spoletino , Trebbiano Giallo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo .

Grapes from the Trebbiano family are used to produce the following DOC wines: Maremma Toscana , Romagna , Trebbiano d'Abruzzo , Aprilia , Arborea, Capriano del Colle , Romagna and Colli Piacentini . In addition, the Trebbiano grape is used as the main variety in numerous white blended wines , such as the aforementioned Orvieto and the well-known white wines Frascati , Lugana , Bianco di Custoza and Est! Est !! Est !!! di Montefiascone . As a subsidiary variety it is u. a. in Soave and Gambellara as well as the red wines Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Torgiano .

Traditionally, Trebbiano grapes were added to the famous Tuscan red wine Chianti in small quantities together with the white Malvasia grape variety . Ever since the winemakers stopped adding white grapes in Chianti (it has been completely prohibited since the 2006 harvest), a new wine was invented for the excess of Trebbiano grapes: the IGT white wine Galestro .

In addition to Italy, the grape is also grown in France, where it is called “Ugni blanc” in the south and “Saint-Émilion” in the cognac region . In 2010, 12,905 hectares of vineyards were raised in France. Just as the Airén grape feeds the brandy distilleries in Spain , the abundant thin, sour wine of the Ugni Blanc supplies the stills of the Cognac and Armagnac regions. Ugni Blanc was probably imported from Italy in the 14th century when the papal court settled in Avignon . In a study published in 2008, the Trebbiano toscana grape variety was related to the Garganega grape variety . Due to the not yet identified parents of the Garganega variety, the exact relationship cannot yet be specified.

In Argentina and Australia Trebbiano is also grown, for in Australia. B. as "White Shiraz" or "White Hermitage".

In the region around the Italian city of Modena , the famous vinegar " Aceto Balsamico Tradizionale di Modena" is made from the grapes .

It is unclear whether Trebbiano is identical to the Talia grape variety grown in Portugal .
