The white wine variety Trebbiano Romagnolo is an autochthonous variety of northern Italy and belongs to the large family of Trebbiano vines. Its cultivation is recommended in the provinces of Ravenna , Parma and Forlì-Cesena and the metropolitan city of Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region . In 1999 a planted vineyard area of 21,557  hectares was raised.

The late-ripening variety is vigorous and very productive. The varietal white wines are straw yellow to golden yellow in color and have a delicate bouquet . The wine is included in the DOC wines Bianco Capena , Bosco Eliceo , Castelli Romani , Colli Albani , Colli Bolognesi , Colli Piacentini , Colli d'Imola , Colli di Faenza , Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa and Trebbiano di Romagna .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. It is hairy white and slightly carmine-red. The young leaves are hairy and greenish in color. The leaf surface of the young leaves is speckled gold.
  • The medium-sized leaves are three- or five-lobed and indented to a medium depth. The stem bay is open in a U-shape. The blade is bluntly serrated. Compared to other varieties, the teeth are set medium-wide. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) is smooth.
  • The cylindrical to cone-shaped grape is medium to large (the grape is almost 20 cm long), shouldered and moderately dense. The round berries are medium-sized and almost amber to reddish in color when fully ripe. The skin of the berry is thick-walled.

The vigorous grape variety ripens about 35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late.

The Trebbiano family of vines

In the study Genetic studies on Trebbiano and morphologically related varieties by SSR and AFLP markers , published in 2001 , it was found that there are hardly any family ties between the many Trebbiano varieties. Morphologically alone, the varieties share similar characteristics such as the whitish-yellow berry color, the size of the grapes, the late ripeness and the strong vigor. According to a hypothesis by Thomas Hohnerlein-Buchinger from 1996, the name does not come from the Trebulanus variety mentioned by Pliny , but from the Franconian term Draibio , which stands for strong vigor. During the conquest of the Longobard Empire, Charlemagne ensured that fallow vineyards were quickly re-established and recommended vigorous varieties.
