Nuceria Alfaterna

In ancient times, Nuceria Alfaterna was an important city on the Sarnus River in the Italian region of Campania .

At Nuceria the streets that led to the cities of Pompeii , Benevento , Nola and Salernum crossed . According to the Greek writer Konon , the city was founded by Peloponnesian Pelasgians . The name is Oskisch and means "Neuberg". The nickname Alfaterna is derived from the Samnite tribe of the Alfaternians.

315 BC The inhabitants of the city fought against republican Rome and took part in the uprising of the Samnites. After a landing attempt by Roman fleet soldiers at the river mouth had been repulsed by the Pompeians, Nuceria was in 308 BC. In 59 AD, according to a report by the historian Tacitus , a mass brawl broke out during a gladiatorial game between Nuceria and Pompeii that was being fought in Pompeii. In 62 an earthquake struck parts of Campania, and Nuceria was also affected.

The city became a bishopric early on . The city ​​also played a minor role in late antiquity : after the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great had spoken out in favor of Pope Symmachus and against the antipope Laurentius in 499 , Laurentius was deposed and instead became Bishop of Nuceria.

Today the city is called Nocera Inferiore .
