Battle of Montecatini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The battle of Montecatini took place on August 29, 1315 at what is now Montecatini Terme . The opponents were the cities of Pisa under their Ghibelline lord Uguccione della Faggiola and Lucca on one side. They faced a coalition of the cities of Florence , Siena , Prato , Pistoia , Arezzo , Volterra , San Gimignano and their Neapolitan allies under Philip I of Taranto .

Contrary to all expectations, Pisa and Lucca were the winners of the dispute. The city of Montecatini, which had been under Florentine rule for two years, was besieged and conquered by the Pisans. Among the participants in the battle was Castruccio Castracani from Lucca on the side of Pisa. Among the dead were Philip's eldest son Karl von Tarent (19 years old) and his (Philip's) brother Pietro Tempesta (23 years old).

The church of San Giorgio ai Tedeschi, near Pisa Cathedral, was built after 1316. It was intended to commemorate the German soldiers who died in battle.
