Tanja Michalsky

Tanja Michalsky (born October 14, 1964 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a German art historian .

life and work

Michalsky studied art history , philosophy and German in Trier and Munich. In 1995 she was at the University of Munich with a thesis on the tombs of the royal house of Anjou in Italy doctorate . She then worked as a research assistant at the Art History Institute of the University of Frankfurt am Main . In her post-doctoral thesis Projektion und Imagination (2004), Michalsky examined the media differentiation in early modern landscape painting and geography in the Netherlands . After a research stay at the Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University in New York, the Art History Institute of the University of Frankfurt am Main appointed her as a university lecturer in 2004 . In the following year, the University of Düsseldorf awarded her the Venia legendi for art history. From April 2007 to March 2015 she held the professorship for art history at the Berlin University of the Arts . From 2012 to 2014 she was the spokesperson for the DFG graduate school The Knowledge of the Arts , which is dedicated to the specific artistic generation of knowledge. Since October 2014 she has been director at the Bibliotheca Hertziana - Max Planck Institute for Art History in Rome and is once again devoting herself to the art of the Middle Ages, especially in Naples and southern Italy.

Michalsky's main research interests are memoria , cartography , painting and art theory of the Netherlands and Italy in the early modern period , visualizations of social space and the relationship between art and science. The focus is on the interest in the meaningfulness of works of art and images, which also shapes their engagement with contemporary art and film.

In 2019 Michalsky was elected to the Academia Europaea .
