Klaus Krüger (art historian)

Klaus Krüger (* 1957 ) is a German art historian . He is Professor of Art History at the Art History Institute of the Free University of Berlin .

Career

Klaus Krüger studied art history, literature, philosophy and Italian studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He received his doctorate in 1987 under Hans Belting with a study of the change in form and function of religious panel painting in Italy in the 13th and 14th centuries. After a research assistant at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, Krüger was a research assistant at the Technical University of Berlin from 1992. There he presented his habilitation thesis on aesthetic illusion in painting in early modern Italy in 1997. After a further two years as senior assistant at the Technical University of Berlin and a substitute professorship in Frankfurt / Main, he was appointed to the chair of art history at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University in Greifswald in 1999 . From 2002 to 2003, Krüger was full professor for early modern art history at the University of Basel , where he was offered a chair for art history at the Institute of Art History at the Free University of Berlin.

Since his habilitation, Krüger has received various visiting professorships and fellowships, including at the EHESS in Paris, Columbia University New York, the University of Florence, the Clusters of Excellence Cultural Basics of Integration in Konstanz and Languages ​​of Emotion in Berlin, the International Research Center for Cultural Studies in Vienna, as well at the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome.

Krüger was and is active in numerous third-party funded research projects or has led them. His professional focus is on Italian art from the Middle Ages to the Baroque, the theory and history of the image, sculpture and visual media in the Middle Ages and early modern times. In addition, however, he has also repeatedly dealt with topics of contemporary art or film.

Since 2012, Krüger has headed the BildEvidenz research group together with Peter Geimer . History and Aesthetics at the Free University of Berlin.
