Hermann Grote

Hermann Grote (born December 28, 1802 in Hanover , † March 3, 1895 in Linden (Hanover) ) was a German numismatist and heraldist , author and editor .

Life and meaning

Grote studied law at the Georg-August University in Göttingen and was a member of the Corps Hannovera ; His lifelong interest was not so much in jurisprudence as in coin science ( numismatics ). He later became curator of the royal coin cabinet in Hanover. In 1851 he was dismissed from civil service for alleged involvement in the 1848 revolution. From then on he lived in Hanover as a private scholar until his death.

He was important as a connoisseur of medieval numismatics, excellent in the field of heraldry and money theory. Grote founded the trade journal “Blätter für Münzkunde” (Leipzig 1834–1844), the “Münzstudien” (1855–1877), the “Numismatic Anzeiger” (1868/69) and edited the “Blätter für Münzfreunde” . He also edited the Hanover State Gazette .

He was a co-founder of the heraldic association "Zum Kleeblatt" in Hanover, the sponsoring association of the Lower Saxony coat of arms.

Honors

  • While Grote was still alive, Grotestrasse was laid out in 1892 (in the then still independent town of Linden (today: district Linden-Nord)); Grote had lived near that street.
