Helmut Zimmermann (archivist)

Helmut Zimmermann (born January 13, 1924 in Gerwisch ; † September 29, 2013 ) was a German archivist and city ​​councilor at the Hanover city archive . He was the author of numerous publications on the history of the city of Hanover and family research.

Life

Helmut Zimmermann grew up in Biederitz , where his father was in charge of the local branch of the Magdeburger Sparkasse . From 1934 he attended the Otto von Guericke School in Magdeburg, where he passed his matriculation examination in 1942 during the Second World War . He then worked for the Reich Labor Service until 1943 and was then drafted into the Wehrmacht . As a soldier he was used in Italy , where he was taken prisoner . During his four-year stay in Italy, he acquired good knowledge of the Italian language .

In 1947 Zimmermann was released from captivity; he returned to Germany and first went to Burgstemmen in Lower Saxony to see a friend whom he had met while they were in hospital . In July 1947 he settled in Hanover , where he initially worked in the AFA (later Varta ) battery factory in Hanover- Stöcken . In 1951 he joined the city ​​administration of Hanover as a candidate for a city ​​inspector and in 1954 passed the second administrative examination. In the same year he was seconded to a newly created inspector's position in the city archives, where he rose to the city ​​council and worked for more than 30 years, until his retirement in early 1986. Due to his good knowledge of Italian, he occasionally worked as an interpreter for the Hanover authorities . as with the criminal police and the foreigners office in the public order office .

Zimmermann was interested in urban history and, as an autodidact, became a recognized archivist and historically knowledgeable urban history and family researcher. During his long career in the city archive, he also published a large number of non-fiction books and specialist articles on the city history of Hanover and on family research, as well as after his retirement. For example, he is represented in the Hanover history sheets with around 30 articles.

In addition, Zimmermann provided training courses for Hanover city ​​guides for decades and gave numerous lectures on historical and city-historical topics in various old people's homes in Hanover. In addition, he designed several exhibitions for the Sparkasse Hannover on historical and city history topics, ranging from small exhibitions in individual showcases in the Sparkasse branches to complete exhibitions in the main office. Research into the history of Hanover families has long been a focus of his work.

Helmut Zimmermann was married and lived with his wife in Hanover.

Memberships

Zimmermann was involved in the German-Italian Society founded in 1947 (later the German-Italian Cultural Society ). For many years he was a member of the Working Group of Lower Saxony Municipal Archives, founded in 1963 . V. (ANKA), of which he was a member of the board from 1969 to 1975. In 1969, although he was not an academic, he was appointed to the Lower Saxony / Bremen Historical Commission in recognition of his research activities , to which he has been a member since then. Zimmermann was a long-time member of the Lower Saxony State Association for Family Studies , where he was made an honorary member in 2006 , and of the Heimatbund Niedersachsen e. V. , where he was appointed honorary member in 2008.
