Friedrich Ludwig Hölzermann (born August 22, 1830 in Salzuflen ; † August 10, 1870 near Sulz ) was a German officer , military historian and numismatist .

Life

Ludwig Hölzermann was born in Salzuflen in 1830. His parents were the former lieutenant Friedrich Conrad Hölzermann (1788–1869) and his (third) wife Amalie Louise Elisabeth geb. Wesel (1808-1860). After his father, who had worked in Salzuflen as a "controller at the Saline ", rose to the rank of chief renter in 1843, the family moved to Detmold . Here Ludwig Hölzermann attended the Leopoldinum Gymnasium , which he left without a high school diploma in 1849 in order to begin a military career. First he joined the Princely Lippe Battalion in Detmold. After attending the division school in Münster , he passed his officers' exams in Berlin and became second lieutenant in 1851 . From 1855 to 1856 he attended the Berlin war school . In Detmold he then took an exam to become a geometer . As a first lieutenant he took part in the Main Campaign in 1866 with the Lippe battalion . He then wrote a book about his war experiences. At the end of 1866 he was appointed captain. After the dissolution of the Lippe battalion in 1867, he joined the Prussian Army where he became a captain in the 50th Infantry Regiment in Posen. Shortly after the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War , Ludwig Hölzermann was wounded in the battle of Wörth in Alsace . A few days later he succumbed to his injury in a hospital near Sulz. Hölzermann was buried in an unknown location in Alsace.

Scientific activity

In addition to his military career, Hölzermann dealt with various scientific topics at a high level, which are often related to his homeland in Lippe. He was a member of the Natural Science Association for the Principality of Lippe (later an honorary member) and had a close connection with the then newly founded Lippe State Museum . In the field of numismatics , he did a great job building up the coin collection of the State Museum. In collaboration with Hermann Grote , a book about the history of money and coins in Lippe was published in 1867 .

As a military historian, Hölzermann dealt, among other things, with the campaigns of the Romans and Franks in northern Germany. In doing so, he looked for traces of historical military routes and carried out, mostly for the first time, precise measurements and smaller excavations at ramparts and other fortifications in Westphalia and Lower Saxony . His unfinished research results were posthumously in the book local investigations, the wars of the Romans and the Franks and the mounting manners of the Germans, Saxons and the later Middle Ages concerning published in the 1878th
