On September 11, 1386, she married Duke John V of Brittany .

After the Duke's death, Johanna became the second wife of the English King Henry IV at the instigation of her brother in 1403. This marriage was extremely unpopular with the Bretons, which is why Johanna had to give up the reign for her underage sons in favor of the Duke of Burgundy.

King Heinrich IV and Johanna had no children, but Johanna often sided with the younger in the disputes between Henry IV and his son Heinrich V. However, during the reign of Henry V, she was charged with witchcraft for attempting to poison him. She was imprisoned at Pevensey Castle in Sussex for four years .

After her release she lived in peace until the reign of Henry VI. inside. She was buried in Canterbury Cathedral next to Henry IV.
