Richard d'Étampes , also Richard of Bretagne or Richard de Vertus-en-Champagne (* 1395 , † June 2, 1438 in Nantes ) was the son of the Breton Duke John V , the Conqueror , and Joan of Navarre Countess of Étampes .

Life

Richard was the eighth child from the marriage of John V with his third wife, Joan of Navarre, which is why he was behind in the succession of the Duchy of Brittany .

Richard's oldest brother Peter changed his name at the request of his father and was named Johann VI. Duke of Brittany. His two sons Franz I and Peter II succeeded their father in the office of the Duke of Betron. When he died in 1457, Peter II was childless, so Richard's older brother Arthur III. succeeded him as Duke of Brittany for 14 months. After his death in 1458 the ducal crown would actually have been given to Richard. However, he had already died in 1438, so that Franz II , Richard's eldest son from his marriage to Marguerite d'Orléans, daughter of Louis of Orléans , became the new Breton Duke.

Other children from this marriage were:

  • Marie (* 1424; † 1477), abbess
  • Isabeau (* 1426; † 1438)
  • Catherine (* 1428; † around 1476), ⚭ 1438 with Wilhelm VII. , Prince of Orange
  • a son (* 1436; † 1436)
  • Marguerite (1437; † around 1466), nun
  • Madeleine († 1462)
