County of Étampes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The county of Étampes ( French : Comté d'Étampes ) was founded by King Philip III. given by France to his son Ludwig (1276–1319) as a Paragium . In 1327 she was raised to a peerage .

In 1375, the Countess of Étampes, Jeanne de Brienne-Eu, entered into an agreement with Jean de Valois , duc de Berry , due to financial difficulties . He gave her the money she needed and in return received a right of first refusal on her inheritance if there were no descendants. The countess died in 1389, the count in 1400.

Johann von Berry, in turn, had promised to leave the county of Étampes to the Duke of Burgundy , but canceled this promise again in 1407, when the Burgundians murdered his brother, the Duke of Orléans . The city of Étampes was conquered by the Bourguignons in 1411, then brought back by the French. Philip the Good , Duke of Burgundy, wanted to give the county to his nephew Johann von Nevers , a great-grandson of Johann von Berry.

Since Étampes was a Paragium , the county returned to the Domaine royal after a process in parliament .

In 1513, Louis XII. the county to his wife, Anne de Bretagne .

Counts of Étampes

According to Schwennicke (see list of the Capetians ) there was a Jean d'Étampes in the 12th century who was married to Eustachia, the daughter of King Philip I and Bertrada von Montfort . Dom Basile Fleureau, on the other hand, states in his Antiquitez de la Ville et du Duché d'Etampes (posthumous edition of 1683) that Jean d'Étampes was neither Count of Étampes nor the son-in-law of Philip I. According to him, this is a mistake by François de Belleforest (1530–1583): Jean's wife Eustache does not come from the royal family, but from the Corbeil family
