Poitiers-Valentinois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Poitiers-Valentinois is the family of the Counts of Valentinois from 1163 and Counts of Diois from 1309. It is best known through Diane de Poitiers , the mistress of King Henry II , who was appointed Duchess of Valentinois in 1548. The family died out in 1715.

history

It is generally stated that Guillaume I. de Poitiers was an illegitimate son of William IX. (VII.) , Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitou from the House of the Ramnulfiden , and the Maubergeron or Dangerose de Châtellerault. In Volume III.4 (1989) of the European Family Tables , the father of Guillaume is given as an Adémar who was married to Rixende, who in turn was the sister of Guillaume, Bishop of Viviers († 1144/45) and Eustache, Count of Valence and 1107 –1141 Bishop of Valence , see.

While the Aquitaine origin explains the name "de Poitiers", but not the possession of Valentinois and the spread of the first name Aymar in the family only with difficulty (Maubergeron / Dangerose was married to Aymeric I Vice Count of Châtellerault ), it is with the second Variant the other way around: Here you can understand how the title of Count von Valentinois came about, why Guillaume had a brother Eustache and a son Aymar, but not why he had the family name "de Poitiers" (Pictavinus).
