Louis de Brézé

Louis de Brézé (* 15th century ; † 23 July 1531 ) from the House of Brézé was Count of Maulévrier . He was the son of Jacques de Brézé and Charlotte de France, an illegitimate daughter of King Charles VII with Agnès Sorel .

The king appointed him First Chamberlain and Grand Hunter of France . Like his grandfather he was captain of Rouen , like this and his father Grand Seneschal of Normandy (1490–1531). In addition, he was appointed Marshal of Normandy.

He is best known as the husband of Diane de Poitiers (1499–1566), daughter of Jean de Poitiers , whom he married at the age of 15 (the marriage contract is dated March 29, 1514) and from whom he had two daughters:

On April 24, 1530, the marriage contract between King Francis I and Catherine de Medici was signed at Anet Castle in the presence of Louis de Brézé, who owned the house, and his wife Diana. After the death of her much older husband in 1531 Diana returned to the Paris court, where she became the mistress of the future King Henry II four years later .
