Valentinois

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Valentinois , the landscape around Valence , had its own counts since the 10th century and first belonged to the margraviate Provence, then later to the Dauphiné in France . It has been part of the Drôme department since 1790 .

The former county was founded in 1498 for Cesare Borgia by King Louis XII. raised to the duchy. In 1548 it was awarded by Heinrich II to his mistress Diana of Poitiers and in 1642 by Louis XIII. to the Monegasque princely family Grimaldi . These still bear the title "Dukes of Valentinois" today.
