Johann I. (Alençon, Duke)

John I of Valois , called the Wise ( Jean I. le Sage ; born May 9, 1385 in the Château d'Essay ; † October 25, 1415 at the Battle of Azincourt ) was Count, then Duke of Alençon , and Count of Le Perche . He was the son of Count Peter II and Marie de Chamaillard .

biography

As early as 1396 he was named Count of Le Perche, in 1404 he inherited the county of Alençon when his father died. The vice-county of Beaumont-au-Maine fell to him as a maternal inheritance . He was also lord of Verneuil , Fougères , Domfront and (through his wife) La Guerche .

Johann grew up in the confusion caused by the mental illness of King Charles VI. was generated. He supported the Duke Louis of Orléans in his fight against the Bourguignons , devastated the Vermandois , and took part in the conquest of Saint-Denis and Saint-Cloud .

In 1412 Charles VI. - while besieging Duke John of Berry and Duke John I of Bourbon in Bourges - Duke Ludwig II of Anjou against him, whereupon he submitted to the king and accompanied him to the sieges of Compiègne , Noyon , Soissons , Bapaume and Arras . He fell the following year at the Battle of Azincourt , in which he led the second line to retaliate after the English broke through the first line. He is said to have killed Edward of Norwich, 2nd Duke of York (the highest ranking loss on the English side) and wounded Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester , in the battle . In fact, however, the Duke of York suffocated in the mud after falling and unable to get up in the thick of the battle.

John of Alençon was buried in Saint-Martin Abbey in Sées .
